Use your iPhone as a clock without charging: a StandBy alternative

Start with the distinction

Apple’s built-in StandBy requires an iPhone connected to power, positioned on its side and stationary. Mobile Clock Pro shows its own clock inside the app. You can open that display without a charger; doing so does not change Apple’s StandBy settings.

Do not expect the same clock face to remain visible after locking the phone or switching to another app. This setup means leaving the clock app open in the foreground. See Apple’s StandBy instructions for the system feature.

Why we built this

As the developer, I wanted to use my iPhone as a clock without plugging it in. Instead of buying an expensive accessory for my desk and gaming setup, I wanted to turn a phone I already owned, or an older spare, into a desk clock with different designs and ways to personalize it.

The starting question became “How can the screen I already have fit my desk?” You can try that same approach with your own phone.

Try it without a charging cable

1. Open the App Store on your phone and check compatibility with Mobile Clock Pro.
2. Open the app and choose a clock face you find easy to read.
3. Place the phone securely and check the display from your normal seat.
4. Explore the colors, fonts or backgrounds available for that design. Some settings require an in-app purchase.
5. Leave the app open and adjust brightness during a short session in your actual room.

Plan around battery use

Using a phone without a charger does not remove its battery consumption. The display uses energy, and runtime depends on battery condition, brightness and the design you choose. We have not measured a specific iPhone’s runtime for this article.

A cable-free position may suit a short work session. For an all-day display, try your own phone and plan to recharge when needed. If you often pick up your main phone for other tasks, a compatible spare can make a more convenient dedicated clock.
