Turn an old phone into a bedside clock
A useful bedside clock is readable from your pillow without adding more light than you want. Try your spare phone in your own room before giving it that permanent role.
Choose the position in daylight
Place the phone securely on the bedside table, angled so you can see it from bed. Leave room for books, a glass and any charging cable. Keep the phone and charging equipment clear of pillows and bedding.
If space is tight, do not assume landscape is the better layout. Try portrait and landscape, then choose the position that is readable and fits the table. Before removing a separate alarm clock, consider which of its functions you actually rely on.
Adjust the face in the room’s actual light
Begin with a dark background and clearly separated digits. Reduce brightness using the phone’s controls and check the result from bed. A level that seems comfortable in daylight can feel too bright in a dark room.
You may prefer a quiet design over a busy or animated face. That is a styling preference, not a claim that a particular clock improves sleep quality or delivers a measured battery saving.
Build the bedside display
- Check app compatibility in the store on the phone you intend to use.
- Open Mobile Clock Pro on iPhone or Nightstand Clock: StandBy Mode on Android.
- Choose a simple face and adjust its available colors. Some options require a purchase.
- Position the phone, read the time from bed and reassess brightness.
- Leave the app open. Do not expect the same display to continue after locking the phone.
Try it before relying on it overnight
An active screen uses battery. We have not measured overnight runtime on a particular model for this guide; check battery and screen behavior on your own device in a shorter trial. If you notice unusual heat or damage, stop using it and have the device checked.
Displaying the time and waking you in the morning are separate tasks. Set and check your morning alarm in your phone’s alarm app; the clock display described here is not by itself a wake-up alarm.
If the arrangement suits you, simplify the display further. A single readable clock can be more useful at the bedside than a screen full of information and visual effects.
